3rd:Saitou Hajime

  • If not one of the most famous members of the Shinsengumi, this man has went under so many incarnations in mangas, animes, and dramas. There is many discrepancies on when and where he was born, though people suspect because his name is Hajime and the kanji for Hajime is Ichi or One (าป), it could have meant he was born on the first day of the first month of the year. Hajime had joined the Shinsengumi through the Aizu clan under the name of Yamaguchi Jirou when serving under Hijikata as an assistant. Being noticed for being one of the strongest swordsmen in the Shinsengumi he became the captain of the third Shinsengumi patrol troop. He was mostly known for performing many of the assassinations within the Shinsengumi (most notably Itou Kashitarou's assassination). After the fall of the Shinsengumi, he returned to the Aizu and married Takagi Tokio, a daughter of a high official within the Aizu, in 1873 (Meiji 6). Three years later, they had their first son in 1876 (Meiji 9; I believe they had three other children after him).  After Japan turned over to the Meiji he first got a job at a university teaching kendo, he then left that a few years later and become a sword wielding police officer to take part in the Seinan war (another rebellion against the meiji). During this time he had changed his name again to Fujita Gorou and after the war became a direct spy to the police commissioner Kawaji Toshiyoshi. Shortly after retiring from the police force he became a security guard at a museum in Tokyo. When retiring from there, he spent his last years just thinking and roaming before dying of a stomach ulcer due to his excessive drinking. There has not been any confirmation if indeed Saitou was a soba eating junkie and that he smoked, but it was confirmed that he was a heavy drinker (due to the fact that he had died because of it). He died on September 27th, 1915 (Taishou 4) at the age of 72.
