1st: Okita Souji (some sources say Okita Soujirou)

  • The youngest member of the Shinsengumi, Okita Soujirou was a child prodigy of the sword. Care free and spirited, he was what kept the commanders calm. A student of Kondou's at the age of 9, he became a master of the Tennen Rishin Ryu at the age of 15. Okita was the strongest swordsman of the militia, he was also one of the most trusted and usually was sent out to do certain things (like capture Yamanami). Okita later had contracted a fatal disease of tuberculosis, which at the time was incurable, and tried to hide it from the others. Sources say he would cough up blood at night and just become very ill. After the Ikeda incident, he had passed out after coughing up a dangerous amount of blood, it was at that moment Kondou and Hijikata found out of his disease. Worried, the two tried to keep it as much as a secret as possible (the three were very close as if they were brothers, also Kondou was 10 years older and Hijikata 9). After the Boshin war, Okita was admitted to a tuberculosis hospital in Edo and died shortly after on May 30th, 1868 (Meiji 1). He was only 25.
