The
Shinsengumi was still a new militia, thus the many
changes of structure and command. Click on a name

Not a popular one
of the Shinsengumi fame, the commander of the
second Shinsengumi troop took leadership of the
first troop after Okita's death. After the
Shinsengumi fell to the Meiji government, he
returned to his home and changed his name to
Sugimura Yoshie. In 1882 (Meiji 15), he traveled
to Hokkaido and became a kendo instructor for a
few years, retiring then after he made some
graves for his long departed Shinsengumi
friends. A few years later, he written an
autobiography telling his days in the
Shinsengumi, which lead to his fame. He died
shortly after at the ripe age of 76 in the year
of 1915 (Taisho 4).
