The
Commanding Structure of the Shinsengumi
The
Shinsengumi was still a new militia, thus the many
changes of structure and command. Click on a name

Kondou Isami

Kondou Isamu is
the leader of the Shinsengumi. Strong willed and
wise leader, he lead the Shinsengumi to withhold
the honor code of the Samurai. The son of a
peasant farmer, he was adopted by the former
master Shieikan Dojo and changed his name from
Miyakawa Katsuta at the age of 16. He married
his wife and had a daughter before leaving to
Kyoto from Edo to form the Shinsengumi and
protect the Shogun Yoshinobu Tokugawa. After the
fatal Boshin War, he was captured by the Meiji
government (after the Boshin war, Yoshinobu
resigned from his seat and it was now handed to
the emperor) and sentenced to death. He was
decapitated on April 24th, 1868 at the age of
35.
