  • Hijikata Toshizou was a cold hearted and stern leader of the Shinsengumi. Developing the rules and strategies in which the troupe performed their activities, he gave no mercy to weakness or mistakes. As a child, he was much different. Brash, care free, and always getting into trouble. Born to a poor family of no status, when his older sister married into a well to do family, his brother-in-law had him sell his family's medicine, Ishida Sanyaku, door-to-door. This is when he met Kondou around the age of 11. Hijikata was known to be the " Demon of the Shinsengumi ", for his ruthless and cold heartedness. This was backed up with Yamanami Keisuke (a dear friend of his) was sentenced to death by him for deserting the Shinsengumi. After the Boshin War, Hijikata formed up what was left of the Shinsengumi to continue their fight after Kondou's death. Still determined to protect the shogunate, even after sudden defeat, he formed the Hokkaido Republic and died shortly after in a battle when he was shot in 1869 (Meiji 2). He was 35.
